JAKARTA, DC News — Imagine a teenager happily playing a game in their room. Suddenly, a chat pops up from a “new friend” in the game. Casual conversation turns into sweet talk, then threats. Intimate videos leak, leaving lifelong trauma. This is not a horror movie. This is the harsh reality faced by tens of thousands of Indonesian children every year — just like the stories of IMA (15) and S (14) uncovered by Kompas this week.

It all began with one powerful global call in 2017. Let’s trace the story together, step by step, from the Vatican to Indonesia’s cyberspace. This is more than dry facts — it’s a strong warning and a message of hope that we can all take action.

2017: The Rome Declaration — The World Shouts “Protect Children in the Digital World!”

In October 2017, Pope Francis gathered world leaders, scientists, tech experts, and religious leaders in Rome. The result? The Rome Declaration on Child Dignity in the Digital World — a global “emergency call.”

The message is simple: the amazing digital technology we love has also become a deadly weapon in the hands of child predators. The Declaration demands:

  • All countries create stricter laws.
  • Technology companies (owners of games and social media) must help detect and remove harmful content.
  • Churches and civil society must get involved.
  • Children must be educated to stay safe online.

The Pope spoke firmly: “We all have a special responsibility to protect children from this terrible evil.” The Rome Declaration became a worldwide alarm bell.

2017–2026: Churches and Christian Organizations Refuse to Stay Silent

The Rome Declaration was not just a piece of paper. Christian organizations immediately sprang into action.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) — representing hundreds of millions of Christians worldwide — continues to push churches to become “safe houses” in the digital world. In 2026, the WCC urged churches to teach digital literacy to parents and children so they can recognize danger.

World Vision International, the world’s largest Christian humanitarian organization, runs the Keeping Children Safe Online program. They train children, teachers, and parents in many countries (including Asia) to avoid predator traps. “Children are not just victims — they can become heroes who protect themselves,” World Vision International stated.

Also active is International Justice Mission (IJM), which pursues predators using technology and police cooperation.

In Indonesia, local churches have built strong defenses. The Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), through its Family and Children Bureau, together with United Evangelical Mission, the National Child Care Network, and the Christian Service Organizations Network, held a national discussion titled “The Church Responds to the Child Protection Emergency in Indonesia” on April 29, 2025. They encourage all churches to implement Child-Friendly Church (GRA) policies, including safeguarding rules, digital literacy education for parents, and prevention of online violence.

The Indonesian Bishops’ Conference (KWI) and the Directorate General of Christian Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs also support similar programs, emphasizing that the church must be a “safe space” that is proactive, not reactive.

2024–2025: Indonesia in Crisis — Chilling Statistics

While the world talked, the threat in Indonesia exploded.

  • 154.9 million people play online games every day. Many of them are children.
  • The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) recorded in 2024 that Indonesia ranks 3rd in the world with 1.2 million reports of online child sexual exploitation.
  • The 2024 National Survey on the Life Experiences of Children and Adolescents (SNPHAR) found that nearly 9 out of 100 children aged 13–17 have experienced sexual violence (including through phones).

March 2025: The Indonesian Government Responds with PP Tunas

The government did not stay idle. It issued Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025, known as PP Tunas.

What does it mean for ordinary parents?

  • Children under 16 are not allowed free access to social media or games with chat features (such as MLBB, Roblox, TikTok, or Instagram).
  • Platforms must verify users’ ages (not just a click saying “I am over 18”).
  • Easy-to-use parental control features must be available.
  • Harmful content must be immediately filtered and removed.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya emphasized, “Every single child is valuable. We must save them.”

April 2026: Kompas Investigation Reveals the Ongoing Reality

Even with PP Tunas in place, predators remain clever. The latest Kompas investigation found three main ways they operate:

1.      Through Online Games: IMA (15) met TPK (25) while playing Mobile Legends. From in-game chat, they moved to WhatsApp, dated, met in person, and she was allegedly raped. Threats to leak intimate videos continue.

2.      Using Artificial Intelligence (AI): S (14) became a victim when her mother’s friend used AI to create fake sexual photos and videos of her face. The trauma was so severe she even considered suicide.

3.      Dark Business on Telegram: Sellers promote on social media, direct users to Telegram, demand payment via QRIS, then provide links to secret groups full of child sexual abuse material.

What Does This Mean for All of Us?

From the Pope’s call in Rome in 2017 to the ticking time bomb revealed by Kompas this week, one thing is clear: the threat is real, but we are not alone.

Churches, the government, and society have begun to move. But the most important change starts with you and me at home.

  • Parents: Become more digitally aware. Use the parental control features available on modern gadgets. Talk openly with your children about the online world — without being reactive or emotional, which can make them shut down.
  • Churches: Follow PGI’s call to implement “Child-Friendly Church” and continue teaching digital literacy from the pulpit.
  • Children: Learn to recognize anything “strange” in game chats and be trained to always speak openly and seek advice from their parents.

Digital files may last forever. But our love and vigilance can also protect the next generation forever.

Let’s protect Indonesia’s children. Because the future of this nation lies in their hands — and in the palms of their phones.
