BEIT SAHOUR, PALESTINE — Tears filled the pews of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Beit Sahour on Sunday as hundreds of young Palestinian Christians said goodbye to the priest many called the soul of their generation.

Father Louis Salman, a 36-year-old Jordanian Catholic priest known for his outspoken advocacy and deep connection with Palestinian youth, delivered his final Mass before being forced to leave the occupied Palestinian territories after Israeli authorities refused to renew his residency permit.

The farewell unfolded in scenes of raw emotion rarely witnessed inside the quiet stone church near Bethlehem, the biblical town revered as the birthplace of Jesus. Young worshippers wept openly, embracing the priest as he offered prayers and words of consolation.

For many in Beit Sahour, Father Louis was more than a clergyman. He was a mentor, counselor, and one of the few public figures willing to speak openly about the daily realities facing Palestinian Christians living under occupation.

Church officials say Israeli authorities subjected Father Louis to an unusually intense security interrogation before denying his permit renewal. While no formal explanation has been publicly provided, several church sources believe his influence among Palestinian youth and his criticism of Israeli policies played a decisive role.

Father Louis previously drew international attention after leading prayers during the funeral procession of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, whose killing by Israeli forces in 2022 sparked global condemnation and renewed scrutiny of Israel’s conduct in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli officials at the time accused participants in the funeral procession of politicizing the event. Supporters of Father Louis argue that his involvement reflected pastoral solidarity, not political incitement.

His expulsion comes amid growing concern among Christian leaders over mounting pressure on Christian communities in the Holy Land. Reports of harassment against clergy, vandalism targeting churches, restrictions on worship access, and attacks by extremist settlers have intensified in recent years.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed deep concern over the decision, warning that churches across the Palestinian territories increasingly struggle to retain foreign-born priests from neighboring Arab countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt.

For Palestinian Christians — a shrinking minority in the land where Christianity was born — Father Louis’s departure carries symbolic weight far beyond one parish.

“This is not just about one priest,” said a church member after the service. “It feels like another part of our future is disappearing.”

Demographic studies and church records show that the Christian population across the Holy Land has steadily declined over the past decades due to conflict, economic hardship, emigration, and political instability.

In the hills surrounding Bethlehem, where church bells still echo across ancient streets, many now fear that one of the world’s oldest Christian communities is slowly being pushed toward extinction.

Israeli authorities have yet to issue a detailed public statement explaining the refusal to renew Father Louis Salman’s residency permit.
