AMMAN — Jordan has inaugurated what is being described as the country’s first Christian university, a symbolic and politically significant move that comes amid rising tensions across the Middle East and growing concerns over the future of Christian communities in the Holy Land.

The institution, named the Baptism Site Orthodox International University, was officially inaugurated in the presence of King Abdullah II of Jordan and Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, according to regional and church-affiliated media reports.

Located near the traditional site where Christians believe Jesus was baptized along the Jordan River, the university is expected to serve as an international academic and cultural center tied closely to Orthodox Christian heritage.

The opening carries significance far beyond education.

In a region increasingly shaped by war, sectarian conflict and political instability, Jordan has sought to position itself as a guardian of religious moderation and coexistence. Analysts say the project reinforces the kingdom’s long-standing role as protector of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite custodianship.

Patriarch Theophilos III praised King Abdullah II for what he described as the monarch’s continued defense of Christian communities and sacred sites in the Holy Land.

The Jordanian king has repeatedly framed interfaith coexistence as central to the country’s identity, even as Christian populations across parts of the Middle East continue to shrink because of migration, economic hardship and regional conflict.

Church leaders have recently warned that escalating instability in Jerusalem and the surrounding region poses an existential threat to ancient Christian communities that have lived there for centuries.

Against that backdrop, the university’s inauguration is being viewed by many regional observers as both a religious and geopolitical statement — one intended to project stability, pluralism and diplomatic balance at a volatile moment for the region.

Jordan also hopes the project will strengthen religious tourism around the baptism site, one of the country’s most internationally recognized pilgrimage destinations.

While modest in scale compared with major global universities, the institution’s symbolism may prove far larger: a rare public investment in Christian presence and interfaith identity in the modern Middle East.
