"Mel Gibson has officially wrapped filming on The Resurrection of the Christ, the ambitious two-part sequel to The Passion of the Christ. With massive VFX depicting the Harrowing of Hell and a 2027 release timed to Good Friday and Ascension Day, the $200M+ Lionsgate project promises to be Hollywood’s most provocative biblical epic in decades"

ROME — After seven intense months of principal photography across Italy’s historic Cinecittà Studios and the rugged landscapes of Puglia, Mel Gibson has wrapped production on The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-gestating and highly anticipated follow-up to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.

The project, split into two feature films by Lionsgate, is now headed into post-production with an ambitious visual effects slate that Gibson himself has likened to a “psychedelic” journey. Part One is scheduled for release on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, with Part Two arriving 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027 — a deliberate alignment with the Christian liturgical calendar that underscores the film’s unapologetic theological ambitions.

Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen, 36, steps into the role of Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel. Supporting cast includes Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Kasia Smutniak as the Virgin Mary, and others in key apostolic and Roman roles. The production, with a reported budget approaching or exceeding $200–250 million, relied heavily on Italian crews and locations chosen for their historical resonance.

Details of the plot remain tightly guarded, but sources close to the project describe a narrative that moves beyond the crucifixion to explore the Resurrection, the empty tomb, appearances to the disciples, and the dramatic “Harrowing of Hell” — a theological concept drawn from the Apostles’ Creed depicting Christ’s descent and victory over death and demonic forces. Gibson has reportedly pushed for large-scale angelic battles and visionary sequences that test the boundaries of cinematic spectacle in service of a faith-driven story.

The Passion of the Christ grossed more than $612 million worldwide on a modest budget, becoming a cultural phenomenon that polarized critics while galvanizing audiences of faith. Two decades later, Gibson — still a polarizing figure in Hollywood — returns with even greater scale and theological depth, raising questions about whether a new generation of viewers will embrace (or reject) such an overtly Christian epic in an increasingly secular industry.

As post-production begins and the first trailer looms, The Resurrection of the Christ is already generating heated online debate — from excitement among evangelical communities to skepticism about its stylistic choices and recasting decisions. In an era when biblical stories rarely command blockbuster resources, Gibson’s gamble could either reignite a dormant genre or further cement his reputation as cinema’s most provocative provocateur.
