"A viral photo showing an Israeli soldier placing a cigarette in a Virgin Mary statue in southern Lebanon has sparked outrage worldwide, prompting condemnation and an official response from the IDF"
BEIRUT — A photograph showing an Israeli soldier placing a cigarette into the mouth of a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon has ignited international outrage, deepening concerns over the treatment of Christian holy symbols amid the escalating conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border.
The image, which surfaced publicly on May 6 and rapidly spread across social media platforms, appears to show the soldier smiling beside the statue in the Christian village of Debel while smoking himself. For many Christians across the world, the scene was viewed not merely as offensive, but as a profound act of desecration.
The controversy comes only weeks after another incident in the same village, where an Israeli soldier was reportedly filmed smashing a crucifix with a sledgehammer — an episode that had already drawn sharp criticism and forced public apologies.
“This deeply provokes us,” Father Fadi Felfeli, a local church leader in Debel, told the BBC. “Especially after what happened with the cross incident. Such actions reflect hatred and a serious lack of moral responsibility.”
Debel, a predominantly Christian village near Lebanon’s southern frontier, has remained caught in the crossfire of Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah. Residents say fear and tension have intensified as violence spreads across the region.
The Israeli military responded swiftly after the image went viral. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman, said the military viewed the incident “with the utmost severity” and confirmed that the soldier involved had been identified and would face disciplinary measures.
“This behavior stands in complete contradiction to the values expected of IDF personnel,” Mr. Shoshani said, emphasizing that Israel’s military campaign is directed at Hezbollah infrastructure rather than civilians or religious institutions.
Still, the backlash continued to mount online and across religious communities. Christian organizations and interfaith leaders condemned the act, warning that repeated incidents involving sacred symbols risk inflaming already fragile sectarian tensions throughout the Middle East.
The episode unfolded against the backdrop of intensifying clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, more than 120 people have been killed in the past week alone as cross-border hostilities escalated. Diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran have meanwhile sought to contain the conflict and prevent a wider regional war.
For many observers, the image from Debel has become more than a viral controversy. It has emerged as a symbol of the growing anxieties surrounding the protection of religious heritage in modern warfare — and the dangerous consequences when sacred boundaries are crossed.
