JERUSALEM — The Israeli government has appointed the senior diplomat George Deek as its first-ever special envoy to the global Christian community, a move announced on April 23, 2026, amid heightened international scrutiny over incidents involving Christian communities.

The appointment, confirmed by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is intended to strengthen ties with Christians worldwide. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the relationship holds significant importance in Israel’s foreign policy.

“The State of Israel greatly values its relationship with the Christian world and its friends across the globe,” Mr. Sa’ar said in an official statement.

Mr. Deek, a seasoned diplomat with roughly 18 years of service, previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Azerbaijan and was the country’s first Christian ambassador. He comes from the Arab Christian community in Jaffa. His father, Youssef Deek, was a longtime leader of the local Orthodox Christian community.

Controversy as a Catalyst

The appointment follows a series of incidents that have drawn criticism from church leaders and the international community.

Among them was a case involving an Israeli soldier who was recorded destroying a statue of Jesus in a village in southern Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces said the act violated its institutional values and sentenced the soldier to 30 days in military prison.

Tensions also surfaced in Jerusalem when security forces temporarily restricted access for the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre during Palm Sunday observances. Authorities said the restrictions were based on security considerations amid ongoing conflict.

These incidents prompted condemnation from various quarters and were seen as potentially damaging to Israel’s relations with the global Christian community.

A Diplomatic and Image-Building Effort

Mr. Deek’s appointment is widely viewed as a strategic effort by Israel to improve communication and reinforce ties with Christian communities, particularly following rising criticism in recent months.

International media reports suggest the move also reflects the geopolitical importance of support from global Christian communities in the region.

Within Israel, Christians make up about 2 percent of the population, the majority of them belonging to Arab Christian communities.

The Israeli government has long emphasized its commitment to religious freedom, though recent incidents have underscored the challenges of ensuring that principle in practice. []
