Pope Leo XIV Warns: The Real Threat Isn’t Science — It’s the Death of Truth

VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV delivered one of his sharpest warnings yet about the modern world this week, declaring that the Catholic Church does not fear science — but should fear a society increasingly detached from truth itself.

Speaking before members of the Vatican Observatory Foundation at the Apostolic Palace on Monday, the pontiff defended scientific inquiry as a vital partner of faith while condemning what he described as a growing refusal to accept objective reality, particularly on issues involving the environment and human dignity.

“The Church supports sound and solid science,” the Pope said, invoking the legacy of Pope Leo XIII, who restored the Vatican Observatory in 1891 at a time when religion and science were often portrayed as enemies.

According to Leo XIV, today’s crisis is no longer a conflict between faith and scientific discovery. The deeper danger, he suggested, is cultural — a widespread erosion of trust in truth itself.
