Thousands of worshippers flooded the National Mall in Washington on Sunday for a sprawling daylong prayer rally that blended patriotism, evangelical Christianity, and politics into a spectacle unlike any seen in the nation’s capital in recent years.

The event, called “Rededicate 250,” was organized ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary and framed as a national effort to spiritually recommit America as “One Nation Under God.” Giant screens, worship bands, American flags, and mass prayer circles transformed the Mall into what organizers described as both a revival meeting and a patriotic awakening.

President Donald Trump, appearing in a prerecorded video message, quoted Scripture from the Book of Chronicles and urged Americans to seek divine guidance for the country’s future. The message echoed themes increasingly embraced by conservative Christian movements that argue the United States was founded as a fundamentally Christian nation.

The rally also aligned closely with the White House-backed “America Prays” initiative, which has promoted nationwide prayer gatherings tied to the upcoming semiquincentennial celebration in 2026.

Prominent conservative political and religious figures were linked to the event, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senator Tim Scott, evangelist Franklin Graham, and televangelist Paula White-Cain. Organizers insisted the gathering was meant to unify Americans in prayer, though the overwhelming majority of speakers represented conservative Christian traditions.

Critics saw something darker.

Civil liberties advocates and religious watchdog groups accused organizers of blurring the line between church and state, warning that the rally reflected the growing influence of Christian nationalism in American politics. Protesters from organizations such as the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Faithful America staged counterdemonstrations nearby, condemning what they described as the fusion of political power and religious identity.

The event underscored a broader cultural shift reshaping American public life. In the Trump era, religious symbolism and political messaging have become increasingly intertwined, turning faith gatherings into battlegrounds over national identity itself.

To supporters, Rededicate 250 represented spiritual renewal. To critics, it marked another step toward redefining America through a singular religious lens.
