Divine Salvation

“But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother” (Judges 3:9—ESV).

Today, we are invited to reflect on a truth that is both gentle and powerful: our God is a God full of mercy. Misericordia Domini—the steadfast love of the Lord—is not merely a beautiful phrase, but a living reality that endures from generation to generation.

We see this clearly in the stories of the judges during what is often called the “Golden Age.” Not because Israel never sinned, but because in the midst of their failures, there were those who remained faithful: Othniel, Ehud, and Deborah. They were not flawless heroes because of their own strength. They became examples because of the purity of their hearts and their deep obedience to the Word of God.

Othniel received the Spirit of the LORD and led with a strong hand. Ehud, despite his limitations, obeyed a strategy that seemed unusual yet divine. Deborah sat under the palm tree, not seeking glory, but listening to the voice of God and leading His people with wisdom that was both gentle and firm.

They remind us that divine salvation rarely comes through impressive human strength. Salvation comes when people cry out with broken hearts, and God responds by sending those who are willing to obey Him fully.

In the journey of our lives, this reflection touches the depths of our hearts: Do I still have a heart that is obedient like theirs? When life’s pressures come—whether in work, family, or within my own inner struggles—do I immediately cry out to the Lord, or do I try to handle everything on my own?

Jesus Christ, our risen Savior, is the perfect fulfillment of all these judges. He not only delivers us from external enemies, but from the deepest bondage of sin. His steadfast love is not temporary, but eternal. Yet for that salvation to truly touch and transform our lives, He invites us to live in obedience that flows from love—from willingness—not from compulsion.

Our homes are the first fields where obedience to God’s Word is taught and lived out.

Parents, are we willing to be examples like Deborah—creating space for our children to hear God’s voice in the midst of daily busyness? Husbands and wives, are we willing to strengthen one another in obedience, instead of blaming each other in times of difficulty? Children, are you willing to learn that obeying God is the most beautiful path to true freedom?

Let us make our dining tables, living rooms, and even our bedrooms into “Deborah’s palm tree”—places where we cry out to the Lord together, hear His Word, and experience divine salvation in everyday life. Amen.
