Devotion
"For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7, NKJV)
Often, we become trapped in a culture of appearances. We measure success by what is visible: prestigious positions, physical strength, or achievements that can be seen by the eyes. Yet on this Exaudi Sunday—while waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit—we are reminded that God’s standards are very different from the standards of the world. Through the story of David’s calling, we learn about kawwanâ, a theology of the “direction of the heart” fully oriented toward God’s sovereignty.
Human Standards vs. God’s Choice
Even Samuel, a great prophet, was almost deceived by Eliab’s impressive appearance. He thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed.” But God gave a firm correction that becomes the center of our reflection today: “For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
God was not searching for a king with the greatest outward power, but for a person whose heart was aligned with His will. David, the youngest son who was tending sheep and not even considered important by his own father, possessed the “direction of heart” that God desired.
Shaping the “Direction of the Heart” (Kawwanâ)
How can we have hearts directed toward God in the midst of a noisy world?
Building the Values of a Sincere Heart
Family is the first “school” for shaping kawwanâ. As the smallest fellowship, the family is called to instill values that go beyond outward appearances:
1. Integrity (Honesty of Heart): Teaching children and family members to do what is right even when no one is watching. Integrity is evidence that our hearts are directed toward God, not toward human praise.
2. A Servant’s Spirit (The Heart of a Servant): David was chosen while he was serving (shepherding sheep). Family should become the place where we learn to serve one another selflessly. True leadership within the family is not about who is strongest in command, but who is most sincere in serving.
Reflection
On this Exaudi Sunday, let us ask ourselves: Where has the direction of our hearts been leading us? Have we been too busy polishing our outward appearance to gain acceptance from the world, or are we diligently shaping the depth of our hearts to be pleasing before God?
GOD WAS NOT SEARCHING FOR A KING WITH THE GREATEST OUTWARD POWER
BUT FOR A PERSON WHOSE HEART WAS ALIGNED WITH HIS WILL
