DEBEL, Southern Lebanon — In a quiet Christian village perched along Lebanon’s volatile southern border, the hum of daily life has once again been replaced by the grinding force of war.

On Saturday night, April 26, videos circulating across Lebanese media showed Israeli soldiers operating an excavator to dismantle solar panels belonging to residents of Debel, a predominantly Christian community near the Israeli border. The footage quickly spread online, igniting outrage and renewing fears among civilians already living under the shadow of escalating conflict.

The destruction did not stop at energy infrastructure. Local reports indicate that homes, roads, industrial vehicles, olive groves, and critical water systems were also damaged—further destabilizing a village already on edge.

For Debel’s residents, this was not an isolated incident.

Less than two weeks earlier, a separate video captured an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ with a sledgehammer in a private garden. The act drew international condemnation, including a rare public rebuke from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said he was “shocked and saddened.” Two soldiers involved were sentenced to 30 days in military prison and removed from combat duty, while others faced disciplinary action. The statue was later replaced by Italian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations.

Yet the latest episode suggests a pattern that has unsettled local Christian communities.

In a statement to Lebanese media, the Israel Defense Forces acknowledged that the actions seen in the recent video “do not align with the values of the IDF.” The military said an investigation had been launched and that command-level actions would follow. As of Wednesday, April 30, no further details or disciplinary measures had been publicly announced.

Residents say accountability cannot come fast enough.

“We just want to live in our homes,” one villager said, according to local reports. “Now even our electricity and water are at risk.”

Debel sits within what Israel has described as a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, part of its broader campaign against Hezbollah. Despite the designation, residents say they were never instructed to evacuate—leaving them exposed to the consequences of ongoing military operations.

According to reporting by The Times of Israel and the Associated Press, similar damage has been reported in other Christian villages, including Rmeish, Ain Ebel, and Qouzah. While Israeli officials maintain that Hezbollah is the intended target, civilians say they are repeatedly caught in the crossfire.

The toll is not only physical but deeply psychological.

The situation has compounded an already worsening humanitarian crisis in southern Lebanon. Thousands have been displaced or are living in fear, while aid deliveries—including humanitarian convoys linked to the Vatican—have faced disruptions amid continued bombardments.

Advocacy groups such as International Christian Concern, along with local church leaders, have raised alarm over the safety and future of Christian communities in the region.

As of this writing, neither the Lebanese government nor the United Nations has issued a formal response to the latest incident in Debel.

For those who remain, each new act of destruction carries a weight beyond material loss.

“It feels like a wound in our hearts,” a resident said—an expression of grief that echoes far beyond this small border village. []
