Malkhuth YHWH: The Sovereignty of the LORD

“Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them” (1 Samuel 8:7b)

Malkhuth YHWH means the sovereignty or reign of the LORD as King over His people. Since coming out of Egypt, for nearly four centuries the nation of Israel lived under the leadership of the LORD. He called Moses, prepared Joshua, and raised up judges to lead and deliver them from various threats.

However, in 1 Samuel 8, the people of Israel asked for a king so that they could be like other nations. They felt more secure having a leader they could see. This request was not merely about a system of government, but it reflected a heart that no longer fully trusted in the sovereignty of the LORD. As God said to Samuel, they were actually rejecting Him as their King.

Often, we have the same tendency. When facing difficulties, we rely more on “our ways” than on “God’s ways.” We become busy calculating possibilities, seeking the fastest solutions, or depending on human strength, but we forget to truly trust and wait for God’s guidance. Without realizing it, we take back control that we should have surrendered to Him.

Through this Word, we are reminded to return to living under the sovereignty of the LORD—not only in words, but in every decision, struggle, and process of our lives. Do we truly believe that God leads perfectly, even when we do not fully understand His ways?

Let us learn to surrender our whole lives to the LORD—our thoughts, feelings, and actions. It requires willingness to obey and patience to wait for His timing. Trust that God’s plans are plans of peace and well-being for us.
