God Who Raises Up and Brings Down

“The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.” — 1 Samuel 2:7 (NIV)

Have you ever felt that life is unfair? Perhaps you have worked hard yet still failed, or you are stuck in a long season of waiting that seems endless. Sometimes, we feel small, worthless, and even looked down upon by circumstances.

Hannah once stood in that place. For years she endured deep pain because of her barrenness and the humiliation from those around her. Yet when God finally answered her prayer, Hannah came to a remarkable realization of faith: God is able to turn situations around.

Understanding God’s Sovereignty

In her prayer, Hannah acknowledged that it is the Lord who holds control over the highs and lows of a person’s life. She saw how God is able to: raise up the weak, restore broken hearts, and humble human pride.

What seems impossible in human eyes is very easy for God. This pattern also foreshadows His greatest work through Jesus Christ. Jesus willingly humbled Himself to the lowest point on the cross, yet God raised Him up and exalted Him into glory. From the cross came victory—a proof that no darkness is too deep to be restored by God’s hand.

Learning to Let Go of Control

One of the most touching parts of Hannah’s story is this: after years of longing for a child, she surrendered Samuel back to God to serve in His house.

This was an incredibly difficult decision. As parents, we often want to maintain complete control over everything—from education and career to our children’s future. We struggle to let go because we feel that we are their primary protector.

Yet Hannah teaches us a mature faith: realizing that children are entrusted to us, not fully ours, trusting that God is far more capable of caring for them than we are, and understanding that the greatest blessing is not worldly success, but seeing our children live according to God’s will.

Hope for You Today

Perhaps today you feel small, defeated, or weary from waiting for answers to your prayers. Do not give up. God is still working behind the scenes of your life.

Believe this: if God could turn Hannah’s sorrow into a song of thanksgiving, and if He could turn the cross into victory for Christ, then He is also able to work in your life. He is the God who raises up the lowly and strengthens the weak—at exactly the right time.
