"Pope Leo XIV says he prays daily for the people of Lebanon in a message to Catholicos Aram I, underscoring Vatican concern over the country’s ongoing crisis and the future of Middle Eastern Christians"
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has delivered a deeply personal message of solidarity to the people of Lebanon, saying he prays for the country every day as it struggles through one of the most severe crises in its modern history.
The message, addressed to Catholicos Aram I, the spiritual leader of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Cilicia, highlighted the Vatican’s growing concern over Lebanon’s economic collapse, political paralysis and fragile sectarian balance.
“I pray daily for the people of Lebanon,” the pope said, according to reports carried by Catholic media outlets.
Though brief, the statement resonated across Christian communities in the Middle East, where Lebanon has long been viewed as one of the last major strongholds of religious coexistence between Christians and Muslims.
A Renewed Vatican Focus on Lebanon
Pope Leo XIV has increasingly signaled that Lebanon occupies a central place in his diplomatic and spiritual priorities.
Since his apostolic visit to Lebanon in late 2025, the pontiff has repeatedly called on world leaders not to abandon the country, warning that the collapse of Lebanon would carry consequences far beyond its borders.
The pope’s outreach to Aram I is also being interpreted as part of a broader Vatican effort to strengthen ties with Eastern Christian churches amid rising instability across the region.
Aram I, a major voice in interfaith dialogue and Middle Eastern Christianity, has frequently warned about the rapid decline of Christian communities across the region due to war, migration and economic hardship.
Lebanon’s Long Crisis
Lebanon remains trapped in overlapping crises that have devastated daily life for millions.
The country continues to face soaring inflation, political deadlock and deteriorating public services years after its financial system imploded. Regional tensions and intermittent security threats have further intensified fears about the nation’s future.
International humanitarian organizations say large parts of the population remain dependent on aid, while many young Lebanese continue to leave the country in search of stability abroad.
Against that backdrop, Pope Leo XIV’s remarks were seen not merely as symbolic, but as a moral appeal to the international community to remain engaged with Lebanon’s future.
A Message Beyond Religion
The pope’s statement also reflects the Vatican’s longstanding concern over preserving pluralism in the Middle East.
For decades, Lebanon has represented a rare model of multi-religious coexistence in a deeply fractured region. Vatican officials have repeatedly described the country as essential to maintaining Christian presence and interfaith dialogue in the Arab world.
By publicly reaffirming his prayers for Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV appears determined to position the Vatican as both a spiritual advocate and a diplomatic voice for a nation many fear is nearing a breaking point.
