LONDON — A sea of Union Jack and St. George’s flags swept through central London on Saturday as tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered for the “Unite the Kingdom” march, a nationalist rally that underscored the deepening political and cultural fractures gripping Britain.

The protest, organized by the far-right activist Tommy Robinson, drew an estimated 60,000 participants, according to the Metropolitan Police, making it one of the largest nationalist mobilizations Britain has seen in recent years.

Marchers moved through Whitehall toward Parliament Square chanting, “We want Starmer out” and “Christ is King,” while many wore red caps emblazoned with “Make England Great Again.” Others carried oversized crosses or dressed in medieval Knights Templar-style attire, transforming parts of the capital into a spectacle of political anger and cultural symbolism.

For many in attendance, the rally was framed as a revolt against what they described as the erosion of British identity, unchecked migration, and a Labour government increasingly disconnected from ordinary voters.

Standing before a roaring crowd in Parliament Square, Robinson — the controversial founder of the English Defence League — urged supporters to channel their frustration into electoral action ahead of the next general election.

“If we do not send a message at the ballot box, we will lose this country forever,” he declared.

Robinson also praised Elon Musk, claiming the billionaire entrepreneur had helped ignite a broader anti-establishment movement across the West. The crowd responded instantly, erupting into chants of “Elon! Elon!”

The demonstration unfolded alongside pro-Palestinian marches marking Nakba Day elsewhere in London, prompting one of the city’s largest security operations this year. Thousands of police officers, mounted units, drones, and facial-recognition technology were deployed across the capital to prevent clashes.

Authorities reported dozens of arrests throughout the day, though police described the overall event as “largely without significant incident.” The security operation alone reportedly cost taxpayers £4.5 million.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the rally and its organizers, accusing them of fueling hatred and division during an already volatile period in British politics.

Yet many demonstrators insisted their concerns were rooted not in extremism, but in growing despair over Britain’s economic stagnation, overstretched public services, and rapid social change.

Among the protesters were military veterans, working-class families, and even Iranian dissidents who said they feared Britain was losing the cultural foundations that once defined the nation.

“The England we grew up in is disappearing,” one marcher told reporters.

The rally comes at a precarious moment for Starmer’s government, which is facing mounting criticism over immigration levels, economic pressures, and internal unrest within the Labour Party itself.

Nearly a decade after Brexit, Britain remains deeply divided over the meaning of national identity, sovereignty, and who gets to define the country’s future. Saturday’s march made one thing unmistakably clear: those divisions are no longer simmering beneath the surface — they are spilling loudly into the streets of London.
