"A reflection on the story of Samson (Judges 16:20) highlighting the importance of character, self-control, and family in shaping a life that remains faithful to God"

“But he awoke from his sleep and thought, ‘I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.’ But he did not know that the LORD had left him.” (Judges 16:20b)

The story of Samson is not merely a tale of extraordinary strength like a superhero. It is actually a mirror of life—showing how someone chosen by God can fall because of his own choices.

From birth, Samson was set apart for God. His life was meant to depend fully on Him. The strength he possessed did not come from himself, but from God.

However, there was one major problem: Samson often followed what was “pleasing in his eyes.” He was attracted to Philistine women because he saw that it was “good in his eyes.” This was not just about feelings—it was a sign that he had begun to walk according to his own desires, rather than God’s will.

This is where his failure began. Samson had great gifts, but his character was not as strong as his physical strength. He did not guard his heart or control his desires. As a result, he lost his relationship with God—even without realizing it.

The verse we read is deeply tragic: Samson thought everything was still the same, yet God had already left him.

This story reminds us that gifts alone are not enough. Children may have talents, abilities, and even blessings from God. But if their character is not shaped, all of it can lose direction.

The family is the primary place where character is formed—not only teaching what is right, but training children to live rightly.

Families need to teach self-control; how to choose what is right, not just what is pleasing; and how to remain faithful to God despite many temptations. Amen!
