"A viral “freestyle handstand” challenge spreading across TikTok and Instagram has sparked alarm in Indonesia after an elementary school student reportedly died attempting the dangerous stunt"
JAKARTA — A viral “freestyle handstand” craze sweeping through Indonesian elementary schools has triggered mounting concern after a child in East Lombok reportedly died attempting the dangerous stunt.
The trend — popularized on TikTok and Instagram — features children balancing on their hands while bending their legs backward until they touch their heads, often without supervision or safety measures. What began as a flashy social media challenge has now escalated into a national warning over the risks hidden behind viral entertainment.
Videos of children attempting the stunt have rapidly spread across schoolyards, prayer halls, and playgrounds. Many youngsters appear eager to imitate online creators for views and attention, seemingly unaware that a single mistake can lead to catastrophic injury.
Orthopedic specialists warn that children’s bones and joints are still developing, making them far more vulnerable to trauma than adults. A failed landing or loss of balance can result in fractures, dislocated joints, severe neck injuries, head trauma — and in extreme cases, death.
Fitness experts and yoga instructors have long cautioned against attempting advanced handstands without professional guidance. The movement places intense pressure on the shoulders, spine, and brain, especially when performed on hard surfaces without adult supervision.
A similar phenomenon briefly surfaced during Ramadan in 2021, inspired by mobile game emotes. But experts say today’s explosion of short-form video platforms has supercharged the trend, allowing dangerous content to spread faster and more widely than ever before.
Indonesia’s Child Protection Commission, known as KPAI, has responded with an urgent appeal for parents and schools to strengthen oversight of children’s digital activity and risky physical play.
“Do not let children experiment on their own. Educate them and limit exposure to dangerous content,” KPAI said in a statement.
Health experts emphasize that handstands themselves are not inherently dangerous when practiced correctly under professional supervision. In controlled settings, the exercise can improve balance, coordination, and core strength. But the uncontrolled “freestyle” variations now flooding social media are being viewed as a serious threat to child safety.
Parents, specialists say, must do more than simply ban the trend. They should actively explain the real-life consequences behind viral stunts that may look harmless online but can turn fatal within seconds.
