"A Christian devotion on Hashgakhâ Peratīth—God’s providence working even through the smallest details of life. Learn from the story of Saul and Samuel in 1 Samuel 9 that nothing is too insignificant in God’s hands."
“Now the day before Saul came, the LORD had revealed this to Samuel...” (1Samuel 9:15a)
The concept of Hashgakhâ Peratīth simply means that God’s providential care for us does not stop at the great events of creation or the salvation of a nation. Rather, He also watches over the smallest details in human life.
Throughout the passage of 1Samuel 9:1–27, we can see how every part of this narrative reflects God’s providence. It begins with something very ordinary—the loss of Kish’s donkeys, which led him to send Saul and his servant to search for them.
This becomes especially clear in verses 15 and 16: “Now the day before Saul came, the LORD had revealed to Samuel: ‘About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin...’” Yet, in the earlier parts of the story, there is no explicit mention that God had sent Saul. Everything is described through simple events: the donkeys were lost, Saul was sent with his servant, the servant suggested seeking the man of God, they met young women drawing water, and Samuel somehow already knew about the missing donkeys.
From this story we learn that we often complain about and grow weary of the small incidents in our lives, never considering them as part of God’s plan for us. We are often captivated only by great miracles—spectacular works of God such as the parting of the Red Sea or how the Lord Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. But what about something as simple as losing our pen?
God also works behind the small things around us. He works through our pain, our complaints, and even our boredom. Every little thing in our lives can become an instrument of God’s presence, leading us into the next stage of our spiritual maturity.
This includes our own family environment. God can use every member of our family as His instrument to transform our lives. Therefore, do not underestimate the small things in your life. That is one way we express our gratitude to the Lord. Amen!
