"Thousands in North and South Toraja held interfaith prayer rallies to confront rising concerns over drug abuse and gambling, highlighting unity across religious communities"
Rantepao, Indonesia — Thousands of residents from North Toraja and Tana Toraja gathered on Saturday (April 25, 2026) for simultaneous interfaith prayer events, reflecting a growing collective concern over the spread of social problems such as drug abuse, gambling and other practices seen as eroding local values.
The gatherings, held at Bakti Field in Rantepao and Plaza Kolam Makale, were organized under the banner “Doa Bersama Sang Torayan,” or “Prayer Together as Torajan People.” The initiative was led by the Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), in collaboration with the Toraja Church Synod Working Body (BPS), and brought together religious leaders from Muslim, Protestant and Catholic communities, alongside government officials, traditional leaders, youth groups and the broader public.
Local and regional outlets, including Tekape.co, KabarMakassar.com and Tribun Toraja, reported the events with consistent accounts. Posts from official FKUB social media channels and statements from community figures further corroborated the reports. No official denials or corrections have been issued by authorities regarding the events.
Speaking in Rantepao, the head of the Toraja Church Synod, Rev. Alfred Anggui — represented by Rev. Kibaid Yulianus Tandirerung — urged unity in confronting the challenges.
“We must work together to prevent and eradicate these social ills in our communities,” Rev. Kibaid said, as reported by Tekape.co. “We cannot allow individuals to exploit cultural traditions as a cover for harmful activities that threaten the future of our younger generation.”
Frederik Kalalembang, a member of Indonesia’s House of Representatives Commission III and a retired police general, emphasized the importance of public support for law enforcement. He noted that authorities had taken firm action in narcotics cases, including dismissing officers involved in drug-related misconduct in North Toraja.
“Never experiment with drugs,” Mr. Kalalembang said. “Once someone starts, it becomes a cycle that can lead them to sacrifice everything just to sustain it.”
The prayer events come against the backdrop of mounting public pressure. Since March 2026, youth groups in North Toraja have staged protests demanding stronger action against drug trafficking and gambling, which they say are undermining the region’s younger generation.
Organizers described the interfaith gathering as both a moral appeal and a practical effort to strengthen social cohesion. Across Indonesia, the role of FKUB aligns with broader government initiatives, particularly from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, to promote interreligious harmony and moderation.
Toraja, widely known for its distinctive cultural heritage and as an international tourism destination, remains predominantly Christian. Yet the events underscored a longstanding tradition of interfaith cooperation in addressing shared social concerns.
The gatherings concluded with joint prayers led by representatives of each faith, followed by a collective pledge to safeguard Torajan cultural values and protect the community’s youth from the dangers of social decay. []
